At the April 27, 2026 Board of Education meeting, students Gabriella Hernandez and Jonathon Rios Roman were named recipients of the 2026 Project Teacher Find Scholarship.

Gabriella and Jonathon are both seniors at Greeley West High School. Gabriella also attends the Teacher Cadet program at the Career and Technical Education Center.

38 years ago, Greeley-Evans School District 6 and the University of Northern Colorado developed Project Teacher Find in an effort to “grow our own teachers.” This collaborative initiative identifies, trains, and recruits District 6 students for the teaching profession. Annually, district counselors and UNC team members work together to encourage students to become educational leaders by providing an opportunity to apply for Project Teacher Find Scholarships. Scholarship recipients receive $2,500 per year during their undergraduate program at UNC.

Gabriella knew that she wanted a career in the classroom as soon as she started the Teacher Cadet program. The program gave her the opportunity to work within actual classrooms and interact with students and educators to develop the hands-on skills required to be a successful future educator. Additionally, she received a jumpstart on her bachelor’s degree due to concurrent enrollment through AIMS Community College. She will pursue a Liberal Arts Education at UNC.

In a prepared statement, Gabriella declared, “One classroom can shape a lifetime, and I intend to make mine unforgettable.”

Jonathon will bring leadership to his future classroom. Greeley West Business teacher Rich Madrid shared, “Jonathon is widely regarded as one of the student leaders of our school. He leads not only through words, but through action - modeling integrity, responsibility, and inclusivity in everything he does.”

While coaching a youth flag football team, Jonathon discovered a passion for teaching. It really touched him when a young athlete told him: “Thank you for everything, Coach.” The moment brought a tear to his eye and decided his future career. Jonathon will pursue a bachelor’s degree in Sports and Exercise Science Physical Education.

After a round of applause, Board of Education President Natalie Mash smiled and said, “We’ll be looking forward to approving your employment in District 6 in about four years.”

Congratulations, Gabriella and Jonathon!
