Dear Parents,
If you wouldn’t mind, would you please read the poem written by Junior, Sabrina Harms. She read this poem at Greeley’s annual Martin Luther King ceremony held at UCCC on January 18.
POEM
I Too Have A Dream
“I have a dream”
Many years ago a man said these words, and they echoed from the moment they left his lips
Echoed through time, space, hearts and minds
Echoed to unite people of all kinds
This man was a King, an Arthur of his time
An artist, musician who called for justice to chime
For equality to ring strong through the land
For black and white to finally stand
Hand in hand
I too have a dream…
A heart’s desire so strong I could scream
A want for love and equality between all
For everyone to answer the King’s call
To lift up the poor and weak
And speak up for the meek
I dream of the day that we no longer carry the burdens of the past
A day when the sorrows suffered by the masses
Are no longer used to fill warlord’s glasses
When forgiveness becomes the sword of peace
An Excalibur, shining brighter than Jason’s fleece
When joy is found in differences and distances
And we restore the balances
Woman and man
Old and young
Rich and poor
Weak and strong
Black and white
Rejoicing in the contrasts of the two
Both equal, making our world strong and new
I too have a dream…
As far fetched as it may seem
But I still hold it in my heart
For that, I know, is how we start
And the secret to pulling the sword from the stone
Is remembering that our future is our own
The dream of Sabrina Harms
The poem indicates what I think Greeley West students are all about: Change Agents in an ever evolving cultural society. At West, one of the reasons we are going to become the best high school in Colorado is our celebration of each other’s cultures. It does not matter what race, creed, or color we are as long as we are Spartan Blue and Gold. Not all of us may be there yet, but with young writers such as Sabrina, the light has shown us the path in which we may follow in order to get there. At Greeley West we will celebrate diversity as it walks our halls, competes on the athletic fields and courts, and walks our stage come graduation time. It is our mission, our belief, and our goal that every student who enters Greeley West will leave with a diploma in hand and their honor intact.
Sincerely,
Bryan R. Wright
Principal
