I'm Alan Stearns and I teach Social Studies.  I grew up in Oregon and have just recently moved to Colorado and have no intention of returning.  While in Oregon, I received both my Bachelors in History and my Masters in Teaching at Southern Oregon University.  I fell in love with history at an early age and believe that it must be interactive.  I remember dreading history class throughout middle school as all we would do is section review from the text book.  Once I entered an honors history class my teacher taught me that "one either sits and waits for history to happen or they seize the moment and become a part of history."  This is a lesson that I have taken to heart and now all of my students are encouraged and required to interact with the history we study.  I have been teaching for four years now and love the teaching-learning process and believe all students are capable of achieving at a high level.  Teaching in both a traditional classroom and in the online environment, I have seen great student success when students are challenged with a rigorous course while having the proper support.  When students enroll in my class they are required to not only memorize facts and figures, but also create history and interact within it in order to truly understand the subject.
